The Metuchen Library (NJ) discovered a hidden gem in its basement recently, reports The Star-Ledger (via RBN). A copy of the 1636 second edition of John Gerard's Herball languished in that infamous "library limbo" since it was donated "decades ago," until some volunteers discovered it this spring and brought it to the attention of the library's director.
After an appraisal and examination, the library has decided to sell the book, as they consider the costs of insurance and restoration too costly. No word yet on how or when the sale will proceed.
The Star-Ledger piece is worth a read; it's got some good information about the book and its background.
