Google, Italy Join Forces for Digitization

Google will scan as many as a million pre-1868 books from libraries in Rome and Florence under a new agreement between the company and the Italian culture ministry. The libraries have already begun an ambitious digitization effort (browse Florence's digital library here), but according to several news reports, budgetary concerns led them to enter into talks with Google.
